The
Ascona Music Festival will present a series of
films directed by the multi-award winning French
director BRUNO MONSAINGEON, dedicated to three
great classical musicians of the 20th century.
Bruno Monsaingeon has gained wide international
acclaim for his books and documentary films on
the greatest classical musicians of our time.
On this occasion he will present some of his
most significant documentaries: those on the
pianist Sviatoslav Richter, the violinist Yehudi
Menuhin and the baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau.
We will have the privilege of having the
director himself introducing two evenings,
discussing his work in filmmaking and his
encounters and friendships with musicians of a
similar magnitude.
The films will be screened in the Sopracenerina
Hall in Locarno.

Bruno
Monsaingeon is a Paris-based concert violinist
who, while still active in the field of
performance, has in the last thirty years,
devoted a large part of this time to the making
of musical films.
He has directed films on and about some of the
major musicians of our time, Nadia Boulanger,
Yehudi Menuhin, Murray Perahia, Glenn Gould,
Sviatoslav Richter, Viktoria Postnikova,
Guennadi Rojdestvenski, Michael Tilson Thomas,
Zoltán Kocsis, Friedrich Gulda, Paul TVenueelier,
Julius Katchen, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, David
Oïstrakh, Julia Varady, amongst many others.
His long associations with Yehudi Menuhin and
Glenn Gould have been remarkable and have led to
the production of numerous films on various
subjects with these two musicians. Two of these
productions in particular, The Open Wall,
Menuhin in China and The Goldberg Variations,
have gained worldwide acclaim. Leading
productions include: David Oistrakh: Artist of

voix de l'âme (1995), Yehudi Menuhin: The Violin
of the Century (1996). Richter: The Enigma
